Last night I used my trusty bacon and sausage drippings to whip up a batch of gravy for biscuits. Today I fried eggs in more drippings (in a cast iron skillet).
While my affinity for bacon drippings may not qualify me for any healthy-living awards, it garners me kudos as a cook, which is what it’s all about, right?
Curiosity is killing me - do you use drippings? Is it a Southern thing? I’ve got a perfectly good polls plugin sitting here gathering dust, so I thought I’d put it to good use and ask y’all.
Inquiring minds want to know:
Thanks for participating!

Biscuits and gravy made from bacon drippings is one of my most favorite things. Unfortunatley my aging gall bladder doesn’t much care it. Or pizza or sausage cheese balls or… well, anything southern and yummy.

A southern girl here uses bacon drippings. Love those biscuits and gravy.

I use bacon drippings to make homemade refried beans. It makes them taste SO good! I cook up bacon just so I can have the drippings for my beans.

I used to use bacon drippings. I just got out of the habit. Yes, it definitely makes food better. Is it southern? Hmmm . . . I learned it from my California-born mom. Don’t know where she got it. Could’ve been her Canadian mom or her Nebraksa MIL. No help there, eh?
So how’s that for total ambiguity and no help whatsoever? LOL!!

Yes, yes, and yes. We pour the drippings off into a glass jar and keep it in the refrigerator until any (or all) recipes call for drippings. Wunnerful stuff!

Yes! Especially for company…not so much every day. And I’m not southern nor am I from a southern home, but I grew up on it. My grandparents are Kentuckians, does that count as southern?

I would wither and blow away without bacon. We eat it a lot. A lot, a lot. And I don’t feel bad. We are careful in so many other ways I feel no guilt in the bacon department. As far as the dripping go… you wouldn’t want to waste them!!
I use to buy bacon in 5 pound quantities from the co-op when I lived in Vermont - I sure miss that!
Cheers from one bacon loving family to another!

now that I voted Yes, and I’m not southern, I’d like to qualify my answer.
As of late, I don’t do this anymore since I’m trying to lose weight and keep my husband from having a heart attack.
I did live in the South for many years, but I still don’t consider myself Southern. I know my grandmother did this very thing and she lived in Kansas her entire life.

Oops. I clicked Yes and I’m NOT Southern. Heaven forbid.
I used bacon grease tonight. In fact, it was Pop’s bacon grease (driven all the way from four hours out of town to our house). I don’t cook regular bacon that often, so I have the inlaws save me a jar now and then!
That’s pretty desperate, eh? Or maybe that’s just SOUTHERN.
Who can cook green beans without bacon grease? Come on!

Yes ma’am, I use drippings. I use them for fried eggs, and especially for green beans. Yum!

lol that is funny…. well, I’m a healthy nut and I don’t eat pork bacon/sausage. We use turkey bacon and there are no fat drippings.

Absolutely! We’re getting ready to have our favorite creamed corn recipe that uses bacon grease!
