My husband was in the room when I read that Harry Connick, Jr. would be at BlissDom. Thankfully, he’s a good sport and understands my love for Harry. Still, it was a moment that no husband really deserves to witness.
The next night he announced at dinner, “Kids, I want you to know that your mom might not be coming home from BlissDom.” It was good for a laugh, but of course, this also referred to Harry.
You see, Harry and I go way back. I bought my first Harry album in 1990, 20 years ago. I own Hope Floats on both DVD and VHS.
My love for Harry runs deep.
At Harry’s BlissDom concert, I stood on the front row, just a few feet away from him.
I smiled. I sighed. I sang. I soared.
The opportunity to go backstage afterward for a photo op was icing on the cake. We were in large groups, 5 or 6 of us plus Harry. No one complained. We were just happy he still performed after being scheduled for the Super Bowl halftime show later in the weekend.
When my turn came, Harry shook my hand and I made some inane comment about being such a fan. You could tell that it meant nothing to him, something he hears every day. Meaningless.
That perfect moment with Harry — the one that existed only in my imagination — evaporated. Harry and I didn’t go way back. I went way back with Harry.
We stood side-by-side, arms around each other, and I smiled for the photos. But inside, I felt just awful.
As the final photo was taken, I felt a vibration between us. My Shootsac was wrapped around my hip, phone in the front pocket.
Harry and I looked at each other, I looked down at the bag, realized what was happening, and looked up at him again.
“I think it’s my phone,” I said, flustered.
He smiled down and said, “Oh, I thought it was me.”
And suddenly everything was okay. We had a moment, not as the adored and the adorer, but two people sharing an awkwardly amusing moment.
Later, I saw that it had been my husband who’d called and made the phone vibrate. When I shared my story, he laughed and said, “I guess I sensed that I needed to come between the two of you.”
And yes, I did return home from BlissDom.

Very cute! Great story. :) Glad you got the Harry moment you’d thought of and I’ll bet hubby is glad the imaginary one wasn’t all the real life one ended up being. He’s safe (of course he always was, I guess). Sigh. :)

What a cute story! I just awkwardly shoot his hand and said “You’ve just made 500 women happy…thank you!” I should have just said “I carried a watermelon!”
