And Now We Leave…

by Dawn on August 12, 2010

in a day in the life

We drove out of Dallas less than two hours ago, leaving our son behind for his freshman year of college. Truly, this is one of those aspects of parenting that isn’t for cowards.

Our oldest has always been in Georgia, an easy drive. It took us two days to get here, and I feel it with every mile we’re traveling east, back towards home.

The passing of the torch to our third son, now the oldest at home, was sad but sweet. I’m glad they are more than brothers, friends, too.

I can still feel the dried tears on my face.

Oh, Dawn! They are going to cherish this photograph. I sure hope my boys love each other like that at that age.

Awe, Dawn, hugs to you! God has blessed you with wonderful sons. I can’t imagine what that will be like. My oldest now is eye to eye with me.

What a touching photo — it makes me remember being left as a freshman in college at a small liberal arts school in Dallas (I’m wondering if it’s the same one?)…. my mother arrived back home in Florida and sent me a letter along with an article from the local paper entitled “The Tears on the Driveway” about a mother sending her youngest off to college. I fell to pieces. Hang in there.
