Each month I create a downloadable desktop wallpaper for the readers of (in)courage. For the November 2011 calendar I added a texture overlay to my photo in Photoshop. Although I’ve never used it, a friend told me that you can create a layered image in Photoshop Elements, too.

I lined up these little gourds on my deck railing to photograph. A commenter on Flickr thinks they’re trying to spell Google—do you see it?

Day 27 - Before

Day 27 - After

The Edits:

  1. Open the image in Photoshop and add a texture on a layer above it. Free textures can be found by Google searching Photoshop textures or checking the Adobe Exchange.
  2. Reduce the opacity of the texture layer until you can see the photo clearly, but the texture, too—probably 20% or less opacity.

Grunge textures can add interest to your photos. They don’t have to match the size or shape of the original image: just stretch them to fit and reduce their opacity (there’s a slider for it at the top of your layers panel) so that they enhance without distracting. You can download textures online or create your own by photographing things like cracked concrete or brick walls.

Please leave a comment and let me know if you can do this in Photoshop Elements!
