Help-Portrait Hurricane Sandy Campaign from Help-Portrait on Vimeo.

This Saturday, December 8, marks the fourth annual Help-Portrait, a worldwide event where photographers, photo editors, makeup artists, and other volunteers join together to give back by taking portraits for those who need them. Although it might be easy to underestimate the power of a portrait, experiences like this and this have convinced me of their importance.

Two of my teen sons worked with me the first year I volunteered; they checked in people and basically did whatever needed done. The last two years I’ve served at the Lawrenceville Housing Authority location, working with and photographing many of the same people each year. This Saturday I’m excited to have my husband join me at a new location in Woodstock, GA! (Our Lawrenceville location won’t have an HP event this time.)

My husband isn’t a photographer or makeup artist and I’m not sure he’s ever edited a photo, but he’s a willing volunteer who’s heard me talk about Help-Portrait for three years; believes it’s a worthy cause; and wants to be part of it.

I’m looking forward to Saturday, I only wish I’d ordered a new red tee in time!
