My Word for 2012: Create

Create is the word that’s been on my heart recently and suddenly I see it everywhere. Creating was God’s first recorded act:

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” ~Genesis 1:1

The New Testament begins with a description of Jesus Christ as the Word:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” ~John 1:1

Ideas are swirling around in my head incorporating graphics, photography, and words. I’m praying for the time, ability, and inspiration to create in this new year!

This Thursday, December 8, three of my kids and I will be there when The Story Tour: A Christmas Spectacular hits Philips Arena here in Atlanta.

31 Days of Real Life: What is the Source of Your Joy?

I started my morning worrying about three aspects of our Relevant trip: a sponsored car, two pair of pants I should have had hemmed before now, and something I needed to pick up in Atlanta (not a quick, easy drive). I needed to be “on” and productive, but instead I was stressed and in a funk.

Within a few hours I’d been on the phone with a media coordinator who works with car companies; a seamstress; and a director of PR. Things looked promising, but I realized why my morning had been such an emotional roller coaster:

Joy was absent because I’d searched for it in external sources.

You (or your husband) won’t always get the promotion; the sponsorships might not come through; your most heart-felt posts will sometimes sit without comment. If these things are the foundation—the source—of your joy, your happiness will constantly ebb and flow.

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” ~ Philippians 4:4

Our pastor has focused on Philippians lately, a book whose central theme is joy. I really love this commentary on Philippians 4:4 (quoted above) in my Thomas Nelson King James Study Bible:

“It is as if the apostle looks into the future, considers all possibilities of sorrow, and in spite of them all repeats ‘the command.’ This command to rejoice at all times and in all circumstances is nothing less than a call to faith. For if the Christian believes that his life and all its circumstances are in the hands of a sovereign, wise, and loving God who is always working to accomplish good for him, than he can indeed ‘rejoice always.’”

31 Days of Real Life: The Lord Provides

One day a week I teach five subjects to a class of homeschool sophomores. This is my second year so I’ve done it all before, but sometimes things still slip up on me.

On the way to church I realized that we’re studying mold—bread or cheese—under a microscope this week, and I forgot to “create” some. Obviously, two days isn’t much time to produce it. I sent a frantic email to my class hoping that someone had moldy food lying around their house. One girl found a bit on some grease; helpful, but not exactly what we need.

While the kids and I packed our lunches for tomorrow’s classes, my daughter yelled, “Ewwwww, gross! There’s still cheese in your bag!”

Last week we had an extra helping of sliced sharp cheddar that was never eaten. It sat in my lunch bag all week sealed in a baggie, where it developed a nice layer of mold.

The Lord provides.

31 Days of Real Life: A Living Sacrifice

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
~Romans 12:1

We’ve discussed how life can be difficult, particularly Sundays. Avoid the easy way out: don’t give up and stay at home, but rather get out of bed; iron the clothes and find the missing shoes; corral the fussing children; put them in the car; turn on some classical music or hymns to calm your nerves and the ~~savage beasts~~ darling children; and just drive to church. If you need a shot of encouragement, check out the comments on this post.

YOU are the living sacrifice which God wants presented in an assembly of believers.

Read that verse above. Something that makes us “holy and acceptable unto God” is worth sacrifice, isn’t it?
