Kid Quotes

May 22, 2008

I love telling my 4-year-old daughter that I can’t remember all of Dora’s name, just to hear her say “Dora Saplora” (Dora the Explorer).

I remember how upset my parents got when my sister and I learned to say something properly, when they really loved “our” versions of it. I felt the same way last week when Lily started saying “Chick-fil-a” instead of “Chick-a-lay.”

When we were hiking up Amicalola Falls last week, a shirtless jogger passed us and Lily started yelling, “He’s nekkid!” At least he laughed.

Maybe we need a unit study on farm animals?

May 12, 2008

My 8-year-old daughter walked up to me at breakfast and said, “While I was drinking my milk I just thought: Am I drinking cow tinkle?”

I nearly choked on my tea. And then we had a discussion of mommies, babies, and milk that I hadn’t anticipated having over breakfast today.

What a 2-year-old says on the phone with her pretend friend

May 6, 2008

Miss Lily was talking on her play phone this morning while I was making her breakfast, and I overheard the following conversation:

“What the heck?!” (Okay, I have the decency to blush while typing this one. It could be worse.)

“You have a play dress on?”

“You dancing?”

“Me, too!”

“Just a sec, I have to talk to Mom.”

“You working?” (to me, because she sees me taking notes)

“I love y’all.” (At this point she’s back to her phone conversation. Note the early use of Southernisms.)

“You’re so cute!”

“Bye. I have to go. Bye, bye!”

The Nose Knows

March 27, 2008

Overheard in my kitchen: “Man, it smells like yesterday!”

I don’t think my six-year-old son wanted the same thing for lunch two days in a row.

Me: Boy, he’s really talented.

Felicity: Yeah, and he’s good, too!

Astronomy through the eyes of a four-year-old

My four-year-old daughter sat and colored during our astronomy lesson today (Jeannie Fulbright’s Exploring Creation with Astronomy), and I discovered that she has a quite unique perspective on the subject!

Me: Have you ever been inside a greenhouse? (discussing the atmosphere)

Felicity: Yes! Miss Ann’s house! (Our neighbor’s house is green.)

Me: Our atmosphere goes very high up in the sky: about 800 miles. That is very high. It’s more than 4 million feet. Airplanes don’t even go up that high. Only spaceships and astronauts leave our atmosphere.

Felicity: I know who else goes that high - superheroes!!

The ghost is clear.

January 31, 2008

My four-year-old daughter hooked into her carseat this afternoon and yelled, “The ghost is clear!”

“What?” I asked, wondering if I’d heard correctly.

“The ghost is clear! That means there are no ghost-es and it’s clear.”
